Klipper Printer Management

Expert assistance with Klipper 3D printer configuration, troubleshooting, and maintenance for the Ender 3 V2.

Overview

This skill provides procedural knowledge and helper functions for managing a Klipper-based 3D printer. Use this skill when asked to:

  • View or edit Klipper configuration files
  • Analyze printer logs for errors
  • Backup or restore printer configurations
  • Troubleshoot BLTouch, bed mesh, or motion issues
  • Modify macros or printer settings
  • Work with the remote printer at 192.168.1.216

Setup

Before performing any operations, ensure remote access is available:

source ~/.claude/scripts/klipper-mount.sh
ensure_klipper_access || exit 1

Helper Functions

Source the klipper-mount.sh script to access these functions:

  • klipper_list [path] - List remote directory contents
  • klipper_read <file> - Read remote file content
  • klipper_write <file> - Write to remote file (pipe content)
  • klipper_exec <command> - Execute command in printer_ender3v2_data/
  • klipper_sync_down <remote> [local] - Download files via rsync
  • klipper_sync_up <local> <remote> - Upload files via rsync

Printer Information

  • Host: printer@192.168.1.216
  • Remote Path: ~/printer_ender3v2_data/
  • Local Cache: ~/.cache/klipper/
  • Printer Model: Ender 3 V2
  • Git Repo: git@github.com:MasonRhodesDev/ender3v2_klipper_config.git

Common Tasks

Reading Configuration

klipper_read config/printer.cfg
klipper_read config/klipper-macros/globals.cfg
klipper_list config/klipper-macros

Editing Configuration

# Download for local editing
klipper_sync_down config/ ~/.cache/klipper/config/

# Edit locally, then upload
klipper_sync_up ~/.cache/klipper/config/printer.cfg config/

Viewing Logs

klipper_exec "tail -100 logs/klippy.log"
klipper_read logs/klippy.log | grep -i error

Backup Configuration

Use the backup script:

scripts/backup_config.sh

Or manually:

klipper_sync_down config/ ~/backups/klipper-$(date +%Y%m%d-%H%M%S)/

Analyzing Logs

Use the log analyzer script:

scripts/analyze_logs.sh

Or manually:

klipper_exec "tail -500 logs/klippy.log | grep -E 'error|warn|MCU'"

Best Practices

  1. Always backup before making changes: scripts/backup_config.sh
  2. Read current config before suggesting changes: klipper_read config/printer.cfg
  3. Check git status in config directory: klipper_exec "cd config && git status"
  4. Review macro defaults in globals.cfg before overriding in printer.cfg
  5. Test incrementally - suggest small changes and validation steps
  6. Check dependencies - many features require specific macro includes
  7. Validate syntax - suggest running FIRMWARE_RESTART after config changes

Safety Notes

  • Never modify temperature limits without user confirmation
  • Warn about changes that affect motion limits or speeds
  • Always validate pin assignments match the actual hardware
  • BLTouch offsets are critical - incorrect values can crash the nozzle
  • Remind users to test moves at safe heights before printing
  • Changes to safe_z_home position must account for probe offsets
